The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) maximises the impact of science and technology for the defence and security of the UK, providing the government with a range of services based on high-quality applied research and analysis.  We work chiefly for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and also carry out work for more than 40 government departments and agencies. We collaborate with academia, industry and international partners to design and deliver programmes that meet defence and security priorities.

As a trading fund of the MoD, we operate on commercial lines with an annual turnover of £550 million in research and advisory services. As part of our work, we lead the design of the defence science and technology programme, which is delivered by industry, academia and – in some areas – by Dstl itself. The Dstl Board is now seeking to strengthen our expertise in research strategy, leadership and management, specifically in the fields of commercial Research and Development (R&D) and academic research.

We are looking for Non-Executive Directors who can make an active contribution to our Board through their substantial expertise within either major R&D environments, perhaps in manufacturing or pharmaceuticals, or who hold a distinguished profile in relevant academic research (including social science), with strong links to the university sector.

Our work is broad and covers research, consultancy, technical and systems risk management, so you will also play a role in ensuring that we observe the highest standards of governance across all of our activities and that we promote a culture of continuous improvement. As a Non-Executive Director, you will also contribute to setting strategy and help us position Dstl effectively to meet existing and future customer need, as well as ensuring that we continue to maintain the confidence of customers and suppliers.
